State Assessment Information

State Assessments at Salida High School
Salida Spartan Logo

To accurately measure student mastery of expected skills, Colorado adopted assessments that align with the Colorado Academic Standards. Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) assessments are the state’s common measurement tool of student progress at the end of the school year in English language arts, math, science, and social studies.

This year, the following tests will be given to the respective grades:

  • Grades 3-8 in English Language Arts and math

  • Grades 5, 8, and 11 in Science

  • Social Studies is suspended this year.

  • Grades 9-10: PSAT for ELA and Math

  • Grade 11: SAT for ELA and Math

These assessments are important because students and teachers work hard all year, and these tests allow students to demonstrate their incredible growth. Additionally, the data from these assessments allow teachers to see how their students are performing against the standards in order to inform instruction and adjust practice.

School Testing Schedule

SAT and PSAT for grades 9-11 will be April 13th, 2022 8am-12pm (approximate times)

CMAS Science for 11th grade will be April 20th, 2022 8am-12:15pm

What is the Purposes of CMAS?

  • Indicate the degree to which students have mastered the expectations of the Standards in each content area at the end of the tested grade level

  • Results provide one measure of a student’s academic progress relative to the Standards

  • Districts and schools may use aggregated scores to monitor their programs’ effectiveness

  • Administrations – CMAS was not administered in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic

What is the Purpose of taking CMAS during COVID?

  • To identify gaps in learning so that schools can take necessary measures to mitigate the impact of COVID19.

Does my child have to take CMAS?

  • We understand that our students and families continue to face unique challenges. However, the assessment of Colorado students remains a requirement of both state and federal law.

  • Parents do have the right to “opt out” of state assessment. If you have concerns, please contact your Cory Scheffel, SHS Interim Principal.

We appreciate your support during this time.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call or schedule an appointment.

Sincerely,
Cory Scheffel, SHS Principal and Meryl Tolsma, SHS School Counselor
